Maharaja Ranjit Singh built up the mighty Sikh Empire, which became one of the wealthiest regions of Asia. However after his death the empire faced internal strife with war with the British becoming a certainty. The lecture looks at the Sikh Empire and what led to the first Anglo Sikh War in 1845.

Bobby Singh Bansal is a British born Sikh historian, writer and documentary filmmaker who has given numerous lectures on the theme of Sikh Heritage and History on an international scale. A passionate advocate of promoting Sikh Heritage and Culture on a global scale, he has been the recipient of numerous accolades and awards, his maiden publication, The Lion’s Firanghis – Europeans at the Court of Lahore, which charts the careers of European officers to the court of Maharaja Ranjit Singh in the 19th century, was received positively by critics and audiences worldwide in 2010. His other notable works include the award winning but poignant documentary The Sikhs of Kabul which was screened at the British Houses of Parliament and voted best factual documentary at the Guanajuato International Film Festival in Mexico City in 2013. This was then followed by The Road to Mandalay – the Burmese Sikhs released in 2014, which gave a rare insight into the lives of the elusive proud Sikhs of Myanmar. His latest publication Remnants of the Sikh Empire – Historical Sikh Monuments in India and Pakistan which catalogues major Sikh structures in India, Pakistan and Afghanistan was released in 2016. His forthcoming documentaries are Kapurthala: A Glowing Tribute and Legacy of the Sikh Empire releasing in mid 2017

The Newarke Houses Museum is a public museum in Leicester, England. It incorporates the museum of the Royal Leicestershire Regiment. It occupies two buildings: Wyggeston’s Chantry House, and Skeffington House.
