Priya Atwal, PHD candidate Oxford University
(This event is fully booked)

Thursday 4 May 2017: Newarke Houses Museum, Leicester 6pm – 7.30pm

The talk will give a brief overview of elite Punjabi women who were precursors to Jind Kaur’s regency, and who played a leading role in handling the military and administrative affairs of the Punjab. The talk will also consider Jind Kaur’s own period of rule, and her complicated relationships with Duleep Singh, the Khalsa Army, Lahore Durbar and British officers from a gendered perspective.

Priya Atwal is a doctoral student in History at the University of Oxford, and is currently working on a research project about the evolution of Anglo-Indian royal relations during the nineteenth century, with the dynasty of Maharajah Ranjit Singh forming a core case study within her project. Priya has long been interested in exploring the history of the British Raj and the British Asian community, and is committed to making historical research more accessible and engaging for the public. She has experience working on TV documentaries, and school and museum heritage projects, as well as teaching History to undergraduates at Oxford.
